What motor?

I am almost finished with a restoration of a wood and f/g runabout and am just haunted by the fact that I have too much motor on this boat. I have this great running 79 100hp Evinrude on a 14' 6" 1950-60's ski boat and it is way overpowered. In doing the USCG calculations I come up with a max rating of 80hp. I need to swap this motor for a 65hp-75hp 2-3cylinder 2stroke motor of OMC origin and about mid 80's. My question is, what would be a my best choice of motors given these parameters? I need be a longshaft with t/t. Thanks for any suggestions...Chief

I think you answered your own question there, Chief.....Look for a mid-80's 70hp..they should be a dime a dozen.

Yup, What Mod 1 said. Those triple loopers are one of the best designs ever.

Good luck, Chief. :)

Stay away from the early to mid 70's models. I don't know what year they made the improvement, but the early ones had the top ring too close to the top of the piston. The upper ridge likes to break off. If you do find a survivor, decarb religiously. There are many still around, but it seems the 75s are more rare.

Re: What motor?

Exactly what I was thinking, 70horse triple that hooks into my existing controls and wiring harness.
WBW, this 100hp motor has the top ring up high on the piston, doesn't seem hurt a thing.
Another question, I don't necessarily want a jack plate but when I built the transom and motor well I had in mind using an earlier 75hp motor I have that has a leg length of 18". I built the motor well so deep I don't have room to adjust this motor up high enough so a plate that would raise the motor would be good, any ideas? Thanks Chief

2 pieces of 3/8" channel alum, 5-1/2" wide. Cut the top on an angle to get your height back...
I'll see if I can find the pic I have of mine...
I'll be back..

Look at this...it can be painted, anodized, etc...You can cut the top at an angle that will raise it farther for a starting point.
walleyehed, I don't particularly want that much setback, but, by taking the steering cable thru the transom I may have suficient length. What would you use for a grommett? Chief

Re: What motor?

So, moderator1, I am curious where "close to the end of the world" is. There's only one mid '80s 3 cyl Evinrude on ebay right now and it's at $1800, can't find one locally, so if I went to this place you are from and they're a "dime a dozen", how much would it be for just one. Chief
;)
