1972 65 Hspr. Evinrude. Nothing happening when the ignition key is turned. Full 12 volts going from battery to solonoid. Full 12 volts at the ignition switch. Took positive cable off battery and off solonoid, and ran a jumper from the positive on the battery to the small bolt on the side of the solonoid, turned the ignition switch and still nothing at all. Where do I go from here.

Re: What next.

My first guess would be to go to the boat shop and get a new magnetic switch(starter solenoid).

Re: What next.

Jump the big posts on the solenoid with jumper cables, it should turn over then!

In general, if the solenoid does not even "click" when you turn the key could be the neutral safety switch. One small post goes through it to the negative side of the battery. The other goes back through the ignition switch to the positive side of the battery

hope this helps
Richard

Re: What next.

Have the solenoid wired as it should be. Use a small jumper wire to run from the small 3/8" nut (the one that has the small black ground wire attached) to a ground area anywhere on the powerhead. Turn the key momentarily to the start position.

If the solenoid clicked in, in all probability the neutral safety switch is not leading to ground as rwise has stated above.

Re: What next.

Jumped the solonoid between the two large post and it turned over, but when I tried grounding the small 3/8 with the wire nothing at all happened. The solonoid is new but that doesn't mean it's working. Can it be taken off and checked.

Thanks
Skip

hello
many of those hydro-electic models used a throttle swich and not a nuetral switch. if the throttle is over advanced the micro switch opens the ground path from the black wire on the solinoid to ground. check that you have continuity from the white or yellor/red solinoid wire to ground

Re: What next.

Been working on this thing for about two months. Isn't there a way that I can isolate the ignition switch from all this other stuff, run a ground to the battery to the solonoid and get it started. Whatever the switch is it has five different wires going to it, and there not removable unless I cut them. Wouldn't starting it like this tend to show where the problem is.
Thanks,
Skip

Re: What next.

nope
your splatter gunning
splatter gunning leads to lots of parts and frustration. it seems you do not understand simple DC circuits and rudimentary electronics. there are several books out on how basic syatems work. I would suggest you study one.
the ign switch recieves power from the pos post on the starter solinoid through an aga 20 amp fuse. when the key switch is in the on position it powers up all ign circiuts and shift switches. in the start pos it allows current to travel back to the small primary post on the starter solinoid. that solinoid is an isolated base design, the current travels through a winding in the solinoid causing a magnetic field that pulls a disc across the two large posts, the other small primary terminal is the current path to ground and on most hydro-electric shifts it went throug a normally closed micro switch actuated by the spark advance lever, if the throttle was opened to far at start the solinoid has no ground path. a quick test of the key swicth power is to turn the key on and see if the choke works, if it does the fuse and wiring to the switch is ok. after that its time for a voltmeter,a test lamp and most importantly the knowledge to use them
good luck and keep posting

Re: What next.

Key Switch turned on, and choke does not work. Wiring to switch just replaced and voltmeter to switch terminal shows 12 volts. Have test lamp also. Need knowledge to know what to test next.
Thanks.
Skip
