what NOT to do at the ramp

My favorite story comes from a family houseboat trip to Navajo Lake or at Lake Powell, I don’t recall. I took my ski boat with my sister and cousins over to a marina to get T-shirts and more ice. We are waiting on the dock for everyone else to come out so we can leave.

Two guys about 28 years old pull up on a brand new 3 seat wave runner. They are all decked out in the new expensive gloves, lifejackets, boots… Acting extra macho (to impress all the girls I was with - my sister and cousins) I am sure.
Guy 1 goes to get the truck to load the new toy. We decide to wait and watch (I knew this would be good as they had no idea what they were doing, but were trying desperately to act like a couple of boating studs. So here comes guy 1 backing down the ramp with a brand new (paper tags) black Dodge RAM 2500. No trailer. I think – no, trailer, what is he doing? So he backs down the ramp, water hits tires, keeps backing up, now the tailgate is floating in the water. Most of the truck is underwater; I look at my family and give them the “I don’t think I would do this to MY new $30,000 truck look.”

Guy 2 is floating on the wave runner. Guy 1 in truck rolls down window (water is ½ way up the door) to tell him to go ahead. Guy 2 idles up to the back of the truck. Gets part way, but decides to back off and try it again as he is going to have to push and pull the wave runner into the bed of the pickup. This time guy 2 has more speed as he approaches new truck that is sitting in water. Guy 2 hits gas on wave runner as the nose hits tailgate. Wave runner shoots straight up into the air as it uses tailgate as a ramp. Guy 2 falls backwards off wave runner as it approaches vertical. Wave runner now SLAMS into the back of the truck. It hits HARD! You do the math on what those weigh and dropping from like 24 or 30 inches, it hits the truck bed HARD! Guy 1 in truck is not happy about this and opens his door to yell at guy 2. He does not make it. Guy 1 opens door and starts to stand on the side of door to turn and yell when he notices that he just let in a good 6 inches of water into his truck now that he opened the door. Guy 1 spins and closes door. Guy 2 now in water attempts to slam the tailgate closed on the truck, taking 4 or 5 attempts to get it closed as he SLAMS it against the corner of the wave runner to try and get it to slide more into the truck to get the tailgate closed.

Guy 1 pulls truck ½ way up the ramp and opens door to let a good 100 gallons of water drain. Water drains from the bed of the truck for as long as we watch.

Just after guy 1 opens truck door and floods his new truck all of us can’t help it anymore and all burst into laughter. We jump in my ski boat and just slowly watch as we slip away from the marina. We can hear them yelling at one another as we putt away. And they didn’t impress the chicks either. I wonder if he went ahead and bought a $500 trailer now that he caused probably $3000 damage to his truck and wave runner.
:D :D :D

Great story, guess I should have posted my story under this heading. Would have fit perfectly.
