got most of the transom wood out today...I dont know how anybody could get that out in one piece to be used for a template.
what a royal PITA. chisel here...pry there...chisel here ...pry there cut here...and there is still some wood stuck to the hull. The rotten stuff didnt have a problem coming (or falling) out. But the un rotten...wow that stuff was hard.

Anyhow my question is there is a thick lip on the inside of the transom hole...i was thinking about cutting it off. Any suggestions on what to do with that? I have already cut through it with the skill saw to get the wood out so there are some slits in it. Sorry for the terrible quality of these "phone" pics

Re: what now

thick lip?

that is the transom bud.....dont stop till ALL the wood is out......

the transom is 2 inches thick including the 1/8th inch glass outer shell.....
take out the wood till you get to the shell.....

start at the top.....slip a pry bar between the shell and the wood....hammer in some...
pick another area a little farther from the first...and drop a wedge in.....keep working...

dont rip the outer hull.

Re: what now

yeah im about to get out there now to finish getting that out and hopefully finish the grinding. really my question is should i cut that 1 1/2 inch lip off the inside of the hole. that way i can pb the new wood back in then cut the hole back out its the third pic from my first post up there

Re: what now

nope....that whole 3 foot by 3 foot section must come out....

when you are doing an i/o you cant just cut some of the t plate out and replace around it of your flatness and parallelism will be off for the re instalation of the drive housing inner and outer plates......it is critical.

that is why the whole area (all around the hole) must come out and new wood be installed.

you cant do it this way.....but this is a pic of what i am talking about

Re: what now

If your talking about the very bottom where the bilge plug goes....yup that wood needs to go also like oops said....cut out that wood as best as you can.....then a 4 1/2" angle grinder with a cut off wheel will cut the metal tube....GO SLOW and don't cut thru the hull or transom shell....

Re: what now

grind it off bud....

you want a smooth flat surface all the way across the skin.....both inner and outer.
