i'm starting a new thread because i don't want to hyjack a thread (merc 470) can some explain more on using aftermarkets or ones that are manufactured wrong. as some people on this forum know i'm rebuilding my 470. i plan on using a different oil filter because they are to expensive to buy and i don't have a dealer near me i would have to travel long distance to get one. i heard someone mention that a 350 chev oil filter is the same. can someone enlighten me i want to put a correct filter on

The best thing to do is first find the OEM part number for the filter, then find the cross reference number to the manufacturer you want to buy from.
Beat's the hell out of getting the wrong type filter and wondering why.

fmalott,
My 1984, 470, uses a Fram PH5.

No problems so far, of course I've only owned it 2 1/2 years and put only about 120 hours on it. But a Fram PH 5 was on it when I bought it.

My cross-reference shows:

Napa 1060
Wix 51060
Fram PH5
Purolator L34631

I have used the Purolator several times, but it was always bone dry when removed, I'd avoid it for that reason. The Napa and Wix have anti-drainback so I prefer them.
