Was loading boat today on a pretty steep ramp and the trim motor was running but not trimming the outdrive up. Rocked the boat and it came on up. Pretty sure fluid is low what oil do I need to put in it.

Ayuh,... It's a pretty simple system that's happy with 'bout any oil lighter than 'bout 30W,...

Merc has used ATF, Hyd. oil, 'n 10W-30 motor oil over the years,...

I wonder, is it ok to mix oils in the trim system? For example I have ATF now but have a load of motor oil that I won't use in the block.

It's a very simple gear pump and a couple of rams.... You could put anything in there (including water ), it'll work. As long as the oils being mixed don't coagulate then it will be fine. And aren't too thick (makes the pump work too hard)...

About a year ago I was replacing the reservoir on my trim pump and when I refilled it, I accidentally put ATF in when the rams still had 10W30 in them... All I got was a nicer shade of red  :D, system still works as designed.... ;) I'm considering flushing the whole lot out and putting Tellus T32 in... (Google that Bondo!!!)

Ayuh,.... Sounds like Shell Hydraulic oil,... ;)

The stuff in the 55 gallon drum in my shop is a 46 grade,...

Both appear to be 'bout a 10W or maybe a 15W oil,...

Yep, we use it in our ROVs... We use 32 in the vehicles and 46 in the winches... Unless we're heading to a cold climate (like Sakhalin), when we use 22 in the vehicles and 32 in the winches (by mixing 1:1 the existing 46 with new 22 ;))... Be the bee-knees in a trim system... ;) and probably cheaper than Merc's mark-up on 10W oil...

Chris......
