Is your pump/reservoir in the boat or on the motor? It is about that year when the PTT design changed style.

Generally automatic transmission fluid is used in the "newer" systems. Older systems sometimes used 10W30 motor oil. Seems the older systems would operate on just about any liquid :D Always use the same type of oil when topping up the level. Don't mix oil types.

As Moody said. if the PTT unit is the pump in the boat style, and the existing PTT oil is brown/clear, it is motor oil. Use 5W-30 to top it off. If the existing PTT oil is red/clear, it is Auto Trans fluid. Top it off with ATF.

If the PTT unit is mounted on the motor transom bracket, it should take ATF.
