What oil????

Need to change the oil in my 1991 volvo penta . For the first time for me that is . Anyway what oil should i run and can anyone tell me how many quarts???? Also can i get a filter locally???? Any other tips on changing the oil in this motor would be great. Thanks

Need more info on the motor, like the displacement. My '99 5.0 take 6 quarts with filter. I have had trouble finding filters at places like wal-mart but if I go to NAPA they can look up the filter for me and get the right one, in stock. I believe they recommend sae 30 oil for my boat and you'll probably need an oil extractor to suck the oil through the dipstick.

I use what the manufacturer recommends and it works great.

Most of us pump the oil out through the dip stick so you will need a pump. I use a sierra filter i believe.

I really don't worry to much about my oil because It sees so little use compared to say my car and is changed so often (once a season but comes out looking pretty much like new).

The motor is a 1991 volvo penta 230a 4cyl.... As far as the oil extractor where can i find one???? Advanced Auto???? What time does everyone use????

I have the larger one and it works well and is fairly quick......Mine is a Moeller but I don't think that brand exists anymore ........the West Marine one appears to be the same.

What time does everyone use????

I'm on the west coast.....so I use Pacific Standard Time..... I also use UTC.......

Unlike most other manufacturers and marinizers of i/o engines, Volvo owners manuals typically call for 10W30 when the engine is equipped with an oil cooler

All the owners manuals are available for free download at Volvo Penta's website.
