This will be my first outboard engine in a boat. I've previously owned inboards in ski boats.

I'm looking at some new Lunds, preferrably the Fisherman, an 18 foot boat with a 175 HP maximum allowance. I will be using this primarily for fishing but will also be used for occasional pleasure use and some skiing. I would prefer a four stroke, no less than 150 HP. The boats on hand have had these engines and they are four strokes, Yamaha 150, Johnson 140, Honda 150, Mercury Verado 150. The Two strokes were, Mercury Optimax 150, Evinrude 150. I've heard various debates between two and four strokes. I have not tried any of these engines, nor the boat, something I'm not exactly thrilled about. I like the Verado, Yamaha, and Honda, but the Verado seems mysterious because of the newness. I wish there were some 175 HP engines on these boats. What are your comments of suggestions? After owning a four stroke snowmobile its nice not to add oil and to just change the oil every season. Also, the majority of these boats are rigged with the Yamaha 150 four stroke.

I feel the verdict is still out on the Verado but its main drawback is its ungodly high weight. Before you pop for the Lund be sure to check Crestliner and Alumacraft. Both make close versions of boats in the Lund line. Also don't overlook the Evinrude E-tec motor. It's the most sophisticated two stroke on the market and is every bit as economical as a four stroke with none of the service headaches such as oil changes, valve adjustments, etc.

Check out your local dealers, go with the guys that will offer you the best backup and service. All things being equal, I would go for the Optimax, I am seeing fuel savings better than 4 stroke without the weight penalty

Does the 1800 Fisherman have a 20" or 25" transom?

If a 25", from memory I think that rules out an E-tec since (again from memory) they don't make 25" models in this HP range.

If you want do to some skiing, research whether or not you'll get an adequate hole shot from a 4-stroke.

Since fishing is important, weight should also be considered since you'll probably end up wanting a kicker if you do a lot of trolling.

If I had to pick I would probably go with a 175 Optimax and get a Merc 9.9HP kicker up front, and let the dealer rig it for you the way you want. Out of the 3 models of 4-strokes you list I would go with the Yamaha, unless the local dealer was a complete buffoon.

Evinrude has a full lineup of 150-175-200hp motors in both 20" and 25" shaft lengths.

Go to www.evinrude.com for more info

Interesting info rodbolt...E-TEC won the race.

145 competitors started the race in San Fernando de Apure; 52 made it to the finish line at Puerto Ordaz. The Evinrude E-TECTM outboard engines gave an outstanding performance: all 16 participants equipped with the E-TEC engines finished the race, making it the only outboard engine line to have all of their engines make it to the finish line.

it was indeed a good article. there are some others with yamaha and mercs as well. I hope to try it in aug of 07. if nothing else I hope to have a good time :) :) .
we dont see to many E-TEC motors here yet. mostly small ones. but a dealer friend I have in portsmouth loves them. but we still wont be maytag repairmen :) . there are numerous clases in that race. I think 2 jet ski's did it as well. 1140 miles through the jungle on a jet ski. thats insane.
