mr ken sir, Drain the lower unit into a pan and see what the gear lube looks like. If it's the same, it would sound like the prop shaft seals may be in need of a change out or the bearing carrier o'ring is done for. Could you post the hp, make and year of the engine? If not sure of the year, post the Model Number. This will be of help.
Thanks for your reply Mr Outboard Jim...I have a 40hp Johnson 1992 #VJ40TLENM I NEED TO KNOW WHAT PARTS TO ASK FOR AND SHOULD I REPLACE THE WATER PUMP SINCE I MUST HAVE SOME ONE WORK ON IT FOR ME
Get yourself a new waterpump kit and thermostat and since the lower unit has to be dropped I would replace the propshaft seals and carrier "o"ring, driveshaft seal, shift rod seal, and exhaust leg seal.
I worked 21 years for Sears as a tech in appliances, gas engines, powertools, GDO'S, treadmills, waterpumps and sewing machines. Should I attempt the repair my self???
You should easily have the ability.I would recommend obtaining a repair manual to walk you through the steps. You can get a general repair manual at the bottom of this page or a factory manual for a bit more .Here's a couple of links.
www.marineengine.com
www.maxrules.com
Mr OB sir...thanks for the links and thanks for the advice. I have been waiting on my uncle to repair since sept. 02. I will attempt this my self because I am ready to hit the water as soon as the weather breaks..THANKS AGAIN!!
mr ken, the lower unit seals and o'rings are available in kit form. Saves a few bucks. Just take the model number to a local Johnny/Rude dealer and tell them what ya need. They should be able to fix ya' up with pump kit and seal kit. And like ob suggested, get the manual. Good Luck
