My first boat was a 14' Sears gamefisher and I just bought a regular depth finder and srewed th transducer onto a chunk of 1x4 and clamped it to the back of the boat with a big orange hand clamp from home depot. It worked great.

I have a HummingBird portable fish finder, I think it is the ID 100, anyway it comes in a durable plastic suitcase that encloses a flip up screen and batteries, the sensor is on a suction cup with a long wire, Ive used it on everything from canoes in a lake to 25 ft. ocean boats on the reefline. Im very happy with it...Not too much $$$ either, Mark

I put a hummingbird Portrait on my drift boat. Works well if you can keep the suction stuck in place. Might be easier on the material of a canoe, my DB is aluminum.
