what pulse to set my tach on

I bought a tach of a friend and he didnt have the instructions for it, was wandering what pulse i need to set it on for a 1972 50 hp johnson 2cyl.It has a 2p4cyl,3p6cyl,4p8cyl,5p,6pulse setting.i would appeciate if someone could help me as i have no clue.Thanks

You didn't state what brand of tach you bought. I had the same question when hooking up my Teleflex tach. I looked on here and also emailed Teleflex and the the answer I received was set it on 6P. Most Johnson outboards set on 6P I'm told. I have a 1973 85hp. 4cyl 2 stroke. I all depends on the amount of "poles" the stator has and divided by the cyl's of the engine I believe. Set on 6P mine seems to read OK.
