Just a general question, I know all this is based on size power and prop. At what rpm (lowest) can you hold your boat on plane?

2500 rpm at 13-16 mph. But i notice the best economy is at 3200 rpm at 27mph.

don't forget hull design and displacement all a factor in it! cant wait to see how this one gets answered lol

I have a 1977 Grew (slickcraft) SS215 with a Mercruiser 165 inline 6. A heavy boat with a deep vee hull. I also have a Doelfin attached to the outdrive. Nobody believes me when I tell them that I plane at 2,500 rpm at 9.8 mph! I've checked it many times in salt water and in the lake and every time it just pops up onto plane. Best speed and economy is at 3,500 rpm and 28 - 30mph. I think the combination of the hull shape, doelfin, propeller and low end torque of the inline six is perfectly matched in my boat. I'm just the operator!

I forgot to add on my previous post that the Grew (Slickcraft) hull has very wide reverse chines running almost the whole length of the hull.

my boat has 3 speeds; no wake, plow, and plane, it planes at redline and nothing less.

I plane at 3,000 RPM. I can go down to about 3,000. If I go to 2,900 I'm on plane technically put my bow is up just a bit.

With my tabs full down and trim full in (down) I can stay up on plane at 12-14 MPH.

Funny you should ask. I was testing the other day and I was able to plane at 9 mph.

A lot of the answer depends on your definition of planing. Here's what most people call "planing":

When the boat begins to plane, the formula becomes irrelevant since the boat is climbing its own bow-wave. The bow rises slightly as it starts by mounting its own bow wave. When it reaches the speed where it overtakes the bow wave, the bow resumes its normal attitude. The boat can often be seen to leave its stern-wave some distance behind it. The hull is now planing.

In a nutshell, what it means is that the boat has climbed it's bow wave and is running level again.

Ain't no way Shadow66 is planing at 9 MPH by most people's definition of planing if we're talking about the boat pictured in his icon.

My boat: 25 foot, Deep-V, stepped hull, 24 degrees deadrise, keel pad and hard reverse chines aft of the step.

My propulsion: Merc 7.4 MPI swinging 26" props through a 2:1 Bravo 3 leg.

I can plane at 2500 RPM and 18 MPH if I put the trim tabs all the way down and leave the drive down.

Boat is most efficient between 28 and 33 MPH.
