OK here is what I have it is an 02 Weeres 24' tritoon with an 02 Merc 150 hp Optimax. Just curious what RPM isI the max for cruising? I thought these motors were made to run wide open but was told today you can't. I'm new to this boat thing.

Most of the standard Optimax motors in your HP range are rated to turn approx. 5750 rpm's max. Normal cruise rpm's run between 3500 - 4500 for your application, but you can run 5000 - 5500 rpm for extended periods without hurting your motor, but you'll burn a good bit more gas at those rpm's. Sounds like a nice rig you got there !!!

Well I hope it is a really nice toona but the day we bought it it left us floating in the lake left the no wake zone hit the throttle reved up to a bout 3000 rom and fell on its face :( it eventually died and would no restart. got towed back to dock and too back to guy we bought it from the next day fired back up. but with a load on it will only rev to 3000 rpm. SO nice boat but really slow! They are taking it to a certified Merc dealer monday.

Sounds like the motor is in the limp mode. Something went wrong, and the computer limited the R's so you could limp home.

And as Rooster said, you can run the motor WOT for and extended period of time as long as the RPM is within the max range. But of course you will drink gobs of fuel and the life will be limited compared to the lower RPM range.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Well It don't matter anymore! I told the seller I felt like he has been jerking our chain on this damn thing and told him we want our $$$ back on it. Maybe I am impatient but when you spend 12000 on a toy that can only be used a very short time out of the year you expect to have the problem taken care of in a timely manner. Is there a place on this forum to complain about service from shops?
