Check your local regulations, they are all different. Your province should have a booklet that covers all the rules, required equipment, etc.

The first safety item is to take an approved boating safety course.

The Great Lakes are more like sailing the Seven Seas and nothing like most freshwater boating. A safety course will also answer all your equipment questions, too. I recommend taking a classroom course. Online courses are fine for refreshers, but a local class puts you in front of instructors familiar with the type of boating you plan to do and you can ask questions directly.

Take a safety course and if you enter canadian waters you must have a pleasure craft operators card if not then you could be fined I cannot stress this enough you need a course

Then to start buying stuff, look at your state site and it will have a list of required safety gear. Sometime states have a few different requirements for the minimum.

This coast guard pamphlet is very useful, there is a quick reference chart for required safety equipment for different sized vessels on pages 42-43. This is for federal requirements, check for NY and Canadian requirements too.

And before and during your outing monitor the weather and never go out during a small craft advisory
