Hey guys,

My friend, is offering me his boat for sale. Its a 1995 Maxum 2300SC. Red. 23'7" With a 5.7 Merc. He says he replaced the motor 3 years ago cause his boat was partialy under water and the engine got damaged (due to a non working bildge and a slow leak that he used to have, it is now all fixed). Other than that the boat looks to be in decent shape, and I actually rode on it a few times this year, some of the gauges dont work (speed and trim) The paint is pretty worn out from the sun on the outside and it comes with no covers (camper or morring). No hour meter either? Whats a fair price to offer him? It dosent come with a trailer either, but I have an extra one. I was thinking around $5500? What do you guys think? Or is that to low?

Thanks
Martin

for what you describe that sounds like plenty.
canvas $1500-and up
trailer $1000+
any other damage from flood ????? water logged foam ect.
trim sender kit $150 u install
speedometer no big deal. most likely a plugged pick up tube
3m marine restored and wax $90 and up for a gallon + a buffer and pads if you don't have now
hour meter - nice to have but a lot don't

That sounds like too much for that boat, especially with no trailer. Non functioning gauges (except for the speedo) could indicate wiring damage due to being under water. Inop trim gauge could be either bad wires or bad trim senders. Faded gel coat can be brought back, but it's a lot of work. No cover means it sat outside unprotected. Water could have got in and found it's way to the foam and stringers.

Expect to put some money and time in it. NADA shows $6400 to $7200, but that is for a mint boat. Granted, it is just a guide.

I would have it checked over good by a qualified person.

I agree completely with fixb52s. We're talking about a 19 year old glass boat here that has been sunk, and left exposed to the elements for at least a time. I would have it professionally surveyed. Yes it is expensive but could save you a world of hurt.

A slow leak over time on a boat this age can cause transom and stringer rot. If that's the case - add $4,500 for the repairs/replacement. You need to have this check out by someone how knows what they are looking for. Boats can look good and rot from the inside out.

As you describe it, this boat has virtually no value - a boat without any type of cover is rotted unless it is a tin rowboat.

It's your friend and your money.

Offer him how much you think the boat is worth and also a number that won't jeapordize your friendship, and talk a little bit about how you might feel should you find out the boat is worthless from rot.

Or that's what I would do.

In looking at boats recently, I've found that prices are REALLY subjective. One man's $10k boat is another's $5k boat.

Offer him 4k for it. 5.7L are a dime a dozen and if you want the boat to be perfect...just like everyone else said it will cost you $$$ to get interior and gelcoat all bright and shiney. Gauges aren't that big of a deal, especially the hour meter. You can pretty much take an accurate guess on how many hours are on that engine since he is your friend and you know how often he gets it wet. You will want to get the gauges working eventually though. I don't even have a speedo on mine but just use GPS or FF to get that info. As long as alarms are working for overtemps, low oil etc... Like what was said above also. It can be tricky buying a boat from a friend or even an aquiantance...it can be the quickest way to make enemies with someone. Those are decent boats though...so don't totally low ball him

Ok...this may be some guidance. I was just looking through various classifieds because I am looking to upgrade. I just saw a mint condition 1993 MaxumSCR (not sure what the 'R' indicates) with a cover and a very nice EZload tandem axle trailer with brakes for $10500. This is in NC. Boat prices vary quite a bit with region but this might be a starting point of coming up with a reasonable offer for both of you gentlemen. Good hunting
