I am new to this sight and appreciate all the answers I will get.

I found an 18' Starchief V for sale. It is in pretty good shape. It is the 120 hp mercruiser inboard/outboard. I was wundering what kind of price they should go for. Just curious if they are in the ballpark with their price. It has been maintained by the same marina since new and with the original owners.

Thanks

What year? What kind of shape is it in? Like new, old & ragged? Have you checked nada.com? On top of that, I don't have a clue what a Starchief V is... sorry... Got pics?

I don't have pics yet. I am hoping to go for a ride this week in it. I think it is around the late 60's. the condition is good. I live in Southern Oregon.

I checked NADA but it doesn't go back far enough

1/2 of what they are asking. Usually works for me. If they don't go for it I really don't need it that bad.

Starchiefs are kinda tough to come by so if you were specifically interested in one you should probably jump on it. We're a notoriously CHEAP bunch on here and tend to think that anything over $1500 for pretty much any old Starcraft is highway robbery :p:) Anyway, if it's water ready and in nice looking condition, I personally feel it could be worth up to $3k. If it runs but is going to need a refit (deck, transom, etc) then probably around $1500. If it has a bum trailer, any/or needs some major engine work, well then we're talking a 3 digit number. Please update your profile with your location because, as mentioned, it makes a BIG difference in pricing.

EZ's right we're a bunch of cheap slob's around here. The problem is, someone on the board picks up a dirt cheap deal and it just reinforces our behaviour. It's not realistic though, unless you spend MONTHS scouring Craigslist, Oodle, local scrapyards and every gargae sale or estate sale within 200 miles of you. Enlisting the army of cheapskates we call the Starmada will also help. These boys can smell aluminum in their sleep.

Two routes:
EZ's advice, we'll call this the Hi-Road
Jasoutside's way, we'll call this the Low-Road

The low-road is way more fun, however, not all have the stomach for it. It has involved Vulcan mind control techniques in the past. Not a pretty site.:p

so does Zach know the sordid machinations that went into his pride n joy coming home?? you know you should feel guilty, manipulating the elderly that way.... (insert imaginary winking smiley since iBoats does not deign to insert them today)

FlyingD-- i think EZ is about right on his figures. you could find one cheaper in the midwest but they tend to run more on the west coast. i paid $1600 for my '64 Starchief in albuquerque, basically in really good shape but seized engine, and still feel it was a pretty fair deal. try offering them $1500 and see how loud they squawk

Barato it's true I got a good deal on the 12' Sea Scamp, $150.00. That's what the man asked at that's what I paid, no dickering or Vulcan antics. I know at good price when I see it.

Prices vary wildly and are influenced some by area. Pictures and a price would be most helpful. I love Starchiefs, very, very cool boats.

It is going for $2500. It is suppose to be a good running ship. Hopefully will take it out this week and see. Looks like the upholstery is good. It seems in good shape. It has a tandem axel. We shall see.

Re: What Should I Pay???

flyingd- I'm on the opposite coast, but I just paid $950 for my '67 Starchief outboard. The floor was shot, cabin wall decent, paint shot but the whole boat is virtually dent free. It came with no motor or trailer. I don't think it was any kind of bargain, I was comfortable with what I paid based on it's condition and the fact that I will do almost all the work to it myself. If I had to pay to have the work done, I would have had to have been paid to take the boat away. I hope that makes sense. I have seen plenty of I/O Starchiefs and Chieftains out there in the same price range I paid, but I prefer outboard and was willing to pay more for that preference. If you like it, and are comfortable with the price, then buy it.

Sounds like a good prospect to me. Usually with a one owner anything, you can gather an entire life's story. I bet the seller will WANT to tell you everything about it, good and bad. Price seems fair to me.

If you like it, and it checks outwith no problems, offer $2000. He might take it and you'd save $500. If he says no, offer more. If he comes back with a counter offer, the fun is on. West coast prices are high, and higher yet the further south you go. I believe you said tandem axle trailer. They go for between $500 and $1000. Electric or surge brakes on the higher end. I'd also check out the deck and transom quite a bit. If he saves receipts That can tell you a lot too. And, if you don't send pics, the starmada mob will be after you.

Well, I wouldn't want a mob after me, so as soon as I can get pics I will post them. It's not too hard, is it?

By the way, thanks for all the advice. I appreciate it.

Oregon? Um yeah, that's a good deal considering the PNW boat prices.

Try this:

If that doesn't work then $2500 for a good running ol Starcraft is a fair deal on the left coast;)

Re: What Should I Pay???

I like to reverse the situation. Make the seller think he's getting the good deal. Offer him $900. When or if he rejects that price go home and let him think about it for a day or two. He may call back with his counter if not call him and double your first offer $1800. Guaranteed he'll take it. In his mind he just doubled what he thinks he'll get for it. Don't make him work to hard to sell you the boat. His time equals money and he will be less likely to make a deal. Make the deal late in the day on Sunday. Be prepared to remove the boat right away.
