What should my operating temp be?

I have a 4 cylinder 170 aka the 470 motor.

I bought the boat from the original owner and the motor and outdrive look like they were on a brand new showroom floor boat.

The water pump on the motor was done and they used a speedy seal? On the shaft that grooves get worn into it to prevent further failure.

Anyways, my gauge reads 120...which doesn't seem right?

All the gauges work right as far as I can tell, and the boat was maintained to a tee.

Re: What should my operating temp be?

get an infrared thermometer and check the temp at the base of the sending unit to see if it matches the gauge. If it does its probably the thermostat stuck open if it doesn't the gauge or the sender may be bad. If you unhook the wire from the sender and ground it the gauge should go to full hot if it does the gauge is good the sender is bad. My set up I had like that was closed cooling and ran about 170 degrees.
