What should upholstery cost?

I took all the cushions from my Wellcraft 28' cruiser to be re-done, and the estimate gave me sticker shock. $1850 for all the interior cushions only (v-verth, aft berth, dinette). This seems insanely expensive. Apparently the fabric (automotive grade) is about $25/yard, but how much does it take? That doesn't include any new foam or anything, just a re-cover.

I'm really not interested in doing it myself. Got plenty of other boat projects I'd rather do.

Re: What should upholstery cost?

A few years ago I went to a local shop to get my cockpit seat recovered, they quoted $1,200.00. I ran from that place, and got the job done elsewhere for $300.00. It was done very nicely and at 1/4 the price. Shop around!!

Labor costs will kill you on a job like that.
They have to take all the old cushion covers apart so they can use the pieces as a pattern to cut the new ones.
10 hours to take apart and cut pieces.
20 hours to sew and put together.
Thats 30 hours labor @ $40 an hour = $1200
