Trying to help a buddy out getting his boat back up and running,,motor is a 1986 Johnson GT 150. he overheated the motor and burnt up the voltage regulator but picked one up on e bay,,did not think it was worth the price of new. Now the tach is not working, and when running the boat at top end I saw voltages as high as 17.5 volts. This seems very high,,what should it be. The boat is running ok,,,the only problem is beeping at upper end,,which is odd because the vro pump has been unhooked for years. Would this motor have a over voltage sensor/buzzer also.

Re: What should voltage be GT 150

When a boat has run for 15-20 minutes, the voltages on a rectifier-only charging system may creep up to 16-17 volts. That's normal. On an engine like this model, it will have a built-in combination rectifier/voltage regulator which will limit charging voltages to around 13.5 volts or so. It's that combination rectifier/regulator which sends the signal to the tach. Possible that the used one which you purchased is defective.
