1986 searay 268 weekender? Currently has 5.7 liter mercruiser I/O engine.
Seriously considering installing an aux/kicker engine. I want it to be remoted controlled. I'll use a steering tie bar to link the 2 engines together for steering.
So what hp would i be looking for? The boat weighs around 5000 lbs

15 to 25 hp 4 stroke

15 might be a little small for windy days.

i see a few boats that size are using 25hp 4 stroke .

if going off shore, 25 hp minimum 25 inch shaft so you can keep the powerhead above water, with trailing waves. and a separate fuel source, so it main fuel is contaminated, you still have a good source for the aux engine.

I would go for no less than 25HP also; if you're in some big seas anything smaller may be just barely enough to keep the bow pointed in the right direction.
