What size AC unit should I add.

I'm trying to decide on what size ac unit I should install in my Monterey 250CR cuddy. From the factory the boat has the option for AC but unfortunately, the previous owner did not buy with AC. Similar boats like mine with AC have a 5,000 BTU unit. I'm not sure if that is to small? I would like to run some vents to the helm area, but they will not be turned on all the time. I've seen 6,000 - 8,00 - 10,00 BTU units for sale. This will also be used for heat in the fall. What are your thoughts? Thanks for any advice.

5K will be fine unless you want to heat/cool the cockpit with all the canvas up. Then you'll need a larger unit. However, you'll only have one zone. You'll make the cockpit ok and the cabin will be cold enough to hang meat. Boats that size are very rarely setup to heat/cool the cockpit.

8K should be more than sufficient for the cabin and to at least make the helm area comfortable. 5X9 vent in the cabin and (2) 4" circle vents for the helm.

I'm thinking of running some ducks around the boat. Maybe 2 - 4" to the aft cabin, and 4 - 4" around the rest of the cuddy and 2 - 4" to the helm. Should one be put in the head? Thoughts on where I should place my vents? The return air will be under the vbirth bed.

Do the vents come with shutoffs so I can adjust the flow in different areas?

Too many vents. Get on the manufacturers website or go thru the install instructions that will come with the unit. One decent vent will flow more air than many small ones (1- 5x9 = 45 in/sq....2- 4" = 32 in/sq).

The AC discharge housing will only have one discharge port off of it. You'll have to break it down according to the math (total CFM). The instruction manual will tell you what it will handle and the recommended sizes according to the size of the unit. a 4" in the head is nice, but not mandatory. Most 4" round discharges with have a knob in the middle to reduce or stop the airflow.

Why are you bringing ducks on the boat? Maybe they will help with routing the ducts?...;)
