What size fuel tank for a small 7.5hp outboard in a Porta-bote?

Early 80's Gamefisher O/B came with a 1.5 gallon fuel tank (external). Is it better to use the 1.5 and have a spare gas can to refill it with or to have a 3 gallon? I'm leaning towards the 3 gallon out of safety and convenience, but I honestly don't know how long it will take to burn through 1.5 gallons of fuel as the motor isn't running yet and I don't have a baseline. The hoses are shot so I can't "Try it and see" just yet. Boat is super light, total loadout with two folks less than 500 pounds. Thanks gents.

Three gallons will run a 7.5 a long time. Most of those engines came with a three.

Pouring gas into a container, while on the water, is not as easy as you would think.

Yeah, and the thought of splashing gas around isn't a good one. I'll look around for a 3.
