What size ( guage )should battery cables be?

I have a chrysler 60hp that really needs new battery cables. I was at west marine and the guy offered to make cables for me.
Here is my big question what guage wire do I need?

6 guage would work but 4 would be better.

I'd use 2 AWG ancor wire just because. I think it's about 1/2" in diameter? I am using it to wire up my Blue Sea dual battery system and that wire is only going about 3 feet total length.
