Hi All
I have a 1989 2302 Trophy with a 1998 225 EFI Mercury, what size Kicker would I need to push this size boat? (just to get back home if needed) I fish Inshore and Offshore about 80-125 miles out. (I used to have twins Force 125hp).

My parents had a 9.9 on a 27' Bayliner and they needed it once to travel a great distance over many days. They had to watch the currents in order to make headway. They were up in British Columbia at the time. Probably could have used the next size up.

I think around the 25 hp mark.
Just my 2 cents though.

Its more than just the HP,its converting the HP to thrust. I have a 15 Honda on a Bayliner 2452 that I cant open up because it ventilates,it is a long shaft mounted as low as possible,I need a extra long shaft. A friend of mine has a 9.9 Yammy on a 26 ft Tolly Craft, it is a long shaft but works good because the Tolly only has a 6 degree deadrise

I would vote 15 as well for offshore. 9.9 would probably suffice for trolling and docking etc but I would not feel good about being 125 miles off shore with it.

Re: What size Kicker?

I have a 15 hp long shaft on my 21 foot aluminum and inland it is fine.
Get out off shore and most of the days it is still good but when the seas get over 8 feet
and the wind 35 knots then it will barely turn up into the wind and sea.
On my boat I have been looking for a 20 hp 4 stroke to replace my 15.

Most important thing is to get the right prop. It needs to be a large high thrust low pitch.
On my boat I have a 4 blade 10 inch and 7 pitch. On a calm lake it will do 5 miles per hour at 3/4 throttle. My boat only weighs 2800 pounds.

Your boat will catch more wind and sea than mine.
I would look for at least a 25 HP extra long shaft 4 stroke as 6 gallon fuel tank is not going to get you back from 80 miles out even on a nice day.
If it not a extra long shaft then you are not going to be able to run more than about
1/4 throttle because in rough following sea you will find the prop will Ventilate and at more than 1/4 throttle motor will rev up and when the prop reenters the water will likely break the flywheel key and shut off until fixed.

Extra long shaft more important than more power in my opinion.

Your seas are calmer than our's up hear North of San Francisco in the summer time.
Winter time then must watch for the big storms.

Small outboard for trolling, sea tow for getting home.
Or twins.

I vote 15. Had one on a 21' Pro-Line wac that I used a couple of times. Had enough oomph in some pretty heavy wind and chop.

I wouldn't pass up a good deal on a 20 if it weighed the same, but 15 will be enough.

Yeah that's why a 15 is usually my recommendation. From most manufacturers it's typically the largest HP in that particular "form factor" and they tend to go up in weight from there.

If you consider that the most you will get out of any 'smaller' secondary outboard like this is hull speed, all you need to do is figure out what it will take to get you to that speed. I don't think you need anything more than 15hp at most. More than that will be extra weight & money for 'no' (or very little) additional speed.

Re: What size Kicker?

Thank You
For the info on the Kicker size, I will be using it for trolling and emergency to get back to port if needed. I have a line on a 15hp Johnson, now to find a good mount and get with seatow.

Thank You again

Hey HCT I have the same boat with a honda long shaft 15 mounted about the same hight. as soon as you put any power to it, it ventilates, needs to be lower in the water
