I have a 1985 Bayliner, 17' Bowrider with 85hp O/B, I really need to get a trolling motor, but have no idea what to look for. What size and/or pound of thrust should I be looking for for this boat? I was just skimming through "FleaBay" & there are ton's of them in all different sizes/LBS. of thrust. What would be my best bet? Please keep in mind, I'm on a really tight budget. Thanks Guy's/Gals for any advice. MAXX

I've got a 19ft and my ?'s on the same matter ended up with a 55# thrust 12volt as the best way to go.

55# on a 17 and moreso on a 19 is pushing the limit especially if conditions are windy. The question is what do you intend to use the motor for? Fishing or emergency power? 55# is the largest you can get in a 12 volt motor. Anything bigger (more thrust) than that and you are in 24 volt territory which requires two batteries in series. And before you ask -- no! You cannot use the starting battery as one of the two. You can of course but it sort of defeats the purpose since that would most likely leave you with a dead starting battery as well as a trolling motor that won't deliver full power.

No, your right, I don't want to get into duel battery's & that stuff. I will only use it for fishing & as far as a windy day go's, if it's that windy I'll just anchor & fish. Thanks, Question answered.
