i'm looking to get a trolling motor as a backup for my 16' aluminum. It currently has a 25 hp Johnson and was wondering what size trolling motor i would need to push that boat only in Emergency backup purposes. Not to be used all the time.

Also, would I need to connect that motor to separate battery?

that would depend on how quick you would want to git from point A to B
and if you going to be in a lake or river where you have a heavy current .

I use to have a 16 1/2' with a four horse for trolling and emergency purposes and it worked fine, I did later change it to a six horse, because of fishing in areas with strong currents. Why would you need to connect it to a battery?

Because he's referring to an electric trolling motor, not a gas one.

FD, an electric trolling motor would be of very limited use for emergency backup power in all but the smallest water. A small (1 or 2 HP) gas motor would be a better bet if you have room for it.

Wow, that didn't even occur to me, because people don't have a need of an emergency backup motor until their batteries are dead!
