what size motor?

I just bought a 1979 Grady-White 18' Adventurer. The original motor, a 175hp Johnson, needs to be replaced. I think 175hp may be overkill on a 18' boat and I am considering a 115hp. The original owner said when the motor was strong it could go 60mph. The boat will primarily be used for just cruising, with a little fishing and skiing thrown in.

Any opinions on what size motor is adequate?

Thanks

cmoyer
I wouldn't go any lower than a 150 if you plan on pulling skiers behind it. You certainly don't want to underpower it. Plus, nothing says you have to run it at the max. all the time. But at least you will have it when you need it! You may actually get better milage with a larger motor when cruising at planing speeds, than with a smaller motor working harder to do the same. Good Luck,

Cmoyer, I agree with Rick that you need at least a 150(6 cylinder) NOT the 115(4Cylinder). I would stick with the 175 as it weighs about the same. Those Gradys are good heavy boats and you will need that HP one day. Goodluck .....BushCat

I would much rather have the larger motor even though I didn't use all it's horses on a regular basis. There are times when you need them all and when you do, you really need them.
