What size outboard to power

I’m contemplating buying a 1977 267 Reinell Sedan Cruiser, OMC Cobra 351. It’s 26 ft, pic attached. I have a heavy duty outboard bracket and plan on ripping out the OMC stuff and installing the bracket and putting on a outboard engine, question is what size outboard will it need. If possible would appreciate a low end and high end range. I live inland and places I go are a 1/2 hour drive to so I don’t need max hp and could probably get by on the lower end. Thanks.

what ever V6 you find. In 4 stroke, 200-300, but not a 4 banger.

The 200 would be a good start, but it is quite a bit of work to rip out an inboard and change over to an outboard, you would pretty much have to redesign the whole rear end of that boat, you might want to do some looking through the threads in the restoration section and talking with some of the guys that do those kinds of major projects.

You might ask one of the Mods to move this over to that section so you can start getting some feedback on a project like this.

To fill the big hole in the transom left by removing the Stringer drive, will basically require replacement and beefing up of the entire transom. Myself I like the older 2 strokes, a Merc 225 would be a nice choice.

agreed, removal of the existing transom would be needed, and a revision of the stringers to take the added load of an outboard and bracket. not to mention a 42 year old boat probably needs a full gut and rebuild anyway.

that is a big boat weighing in about 5500#. there were three engine options and two of them were twins (twin 3.0's at 140 each, twin 470's at 175 each or the single small block. I would be shooting for about 300+hp myself
