hi there, I've bought a 17ft fiberglass cabin boat with deep v , planing hull and no engine. It has a good transon and I would like to know what size outboard to fit. Mainly for fishing and may be sking all on inland waters. thanks. Irish mailer
hello.
You should go to the US coastguard website and look at the "backyard boatbuilding" pages. There they show a formula that takes the length of the boat, the shape(deep V etc.) and the width and height of your transom in consideration. This formula allows you to calculate the exact maximum amount of horse power you can hang on your boat.
I would hate to shoot from the hip on this question because less than precise advice may well endanger your life.
Hello.
The publication is called: Safety standards for backyard boat builders. You can find it on the web at: www.uscg.mil/d8/mso/louisville/WebStuff/comdtpubp16761_3b.pdf
your formula is on page 5.
good luck.
ps.have a care :look at this 16761_3b.If you want to copy the address you must put that line in there.
