Hi, I'm trying to take a piston out of a 90hp merc sport jet (force powerhead)
What size socket is needed to remove the conecting rod cap bolts?
The only 12 point socket I have is a 5/16" and it's just a bit too big.
Would it be metric or sae?

Yes it is 1/4 12 point.
1/4in = 6.35 millimeter
5/16 in = 7.94 millimeter

3/8 in is close to 10 millimeter actully 9.53 millmeter

If I were you and were going to Sears anyway to buy a 12 pt 1/4" socket, I would buy an entire set of 12 pt 3/8" drive sockets. You can never have too many tools ever. And buying one single socket will cost a lot more then you would think after compairing the cost to an entire set... Just a thought...then you will have all the 12 pt sockets you'll probably need...for awhile anyways...

If I buy a set they will probably leave out the one size I will need on the next job or I'll get all the sae and my next job will require metric.
I don't think it is possible to have all the tools you will ever need... ever

Honsetly I do understand what you are saying. However, I have accomulated so many tools now that I have total sets for 6 pt and 12pt sockets for 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drives with both metric and SAE capabilities. You never have too many tools. I am very pleased to see my current outboard, being a 1976 Johnson, uses all SAE size nuts and bolts. But either way build you your tool sets and you will one day not need a socket or wrench to do a typical job because at some time in your past, you already purchased what you needed... Of course I do love tinkering and therefore tools are gifts for me...not a special item needed to do one job... Good luck and have a great day!
