This might help. J90 MLCRD. Since it was built with manual tilt, it always has had the small round 3 wire recifier.

An '84 would have either a 6A or 10A stator (left factory with a 6A if no trim and tilt.)

You could measure the stator resistance.
6A should be 1.3 Ohms and the 9A should be 0.7 Ohms.

This one got away from me. Thanks for the replies. I'm pretty sure it left the factory with the 6 amp now. The J/E engine code has it as a manual tilt. It's been retrofitted with a T/T that suffered a back yard wiring job. It thoroughly cooked the relay box and everything in it. I strongly suspect that happened because it came as a manual tilt with no R/R. This stator puts out right at 17 volts at idle. I was given an almost new box and relays when I bought the boat. I just bought the CDI 10 amp R/R and am hoping for the best. They don't offer a 6 amp, so I figured if it's only a 6 amp stator, a 10 amp rated R/R should do fine. Thanks, Kevin
