I am changing, well trying to change, the oil on Shay's Volvo Penta AQ125A engine. Questions are:

What size wrench do I need to buy for the drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan?

What size oil filter?

How many quarts of oil do I need to put back in?

What weight oil?

Thank you all in advance!!!

Don't need a wrench if you get one of these;

http://www.iboats.com/Seasense-Bras...1522362--**********.849210900--view_id.237880

It will pump the oil out of the pan through the dipstick tube, and will be a whole lot less messier than draining the oil into something in the bilge.

The size of the drain plug I don't know off hand. Now would be a good excuse to get a nice assortment of metric combination wrenches, you will need them elsewhere...;)

What size oil filter?

I would go to your local NAPA for this one. NAPA actually carries the full line of Sierra marine stuff. You also may find that an oil filter from a 240 series Volvo car (same engine as what you have) may work.

For the record, this is the filter Iboats lists for your engine;
http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...gd_poid=354792&gd_row=22&**********=849210900

This is the Sierra part number for their filter; 18-7878 (not in stock at Iboats)

How many quarts of oil do I need to put back in?

I would figure on at least 5 quarts. May take a little less than that though.

What weight oil?

30 or 40 weight Detergent oil, or 10W-30/10W-40 should work fine.
If you go to NAPA and want to spend a few bucks less, grab the NAPA brand oil, it's actually Valvoline in NAPA's bottle. If it were me, I would consider this oil change more or less a flush. I would run it with this oil for a little bit, then change it again.

Click on the link below to download the owners manual for your engine and drive. it answers about all your questions (except part numbers)

http://vppneuapps.volvo.com/ww/PIE/...403&d=Owners Publication&s=5289896&lang=en-GB

You do not drain oil out of the pan like on a car. You would never get the oil out from under the engine without a big mess.
There are a variety of hand, vacuum, and electric pumps for that purpose.

Here is one of the kazillion threads on which oil to use. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=484221

And don't forget to change the gear lube (30W engine oil) in the outdrive as well. That drive costs more than the engine to repairs.

Also in that owners manual, look at the rest of the maintenance items. There is a lot more to an IO than meets the eye.

OK...more questions or clarifications if you wish...

The impeller is not in the out-drive on this boat...it is on the front of the engine, but everyone keeps saying "change the impeller in the out-drive"

There is plenty of room in the bilge under the engine for an oil pan...although everyone keeps saying to pump the oil out.

There are no engine mounts on this engine as everything appears to be attached to the transom...I am confused as everyone keeps saying that the engine is attached to the stringers...ugh...someone please help explain all these items to me...please!!!

Also I posted some pictures on the blog to help with clarification of my questions...see link in signature please.

I am aware of that, but who is "but everyone keeps saying" that keeps telling you it's in the outdrive? I don't see anyone here saying that? I'm confused..................... Even if they did, it means they do not know anything about Volvo and shouldn't be listened to.

Getting the pan in there is one thing. Getting a pan with 5 quarts of oil back out of there without spilling is completely different.
Of course you may have the one boat with plenty of room to do that, but on 99.9% of boats, that's not going to happen.

I am confused as everyone keeps saying that the engine is attached to the stringers.
Some of the Volvo engines are supported only at the transom, not all but some. You have one of the exceptions.

Thank you clearing those up...for sure. Thought I was losing my mind...LOL!!! I was getting so confused. More questions to come for sure.

So does anyone know what size wrench I need for the oil drain plug?

Don, OP got his info about the impeller in the LU from this thread; http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=484683&p=3283230#post3283230.

Will, My advice to you is to use the restoration thread you have going for hull questions only. If you have any more engine/drive questions post em here in the Volvo I/O repair section. No double posting in two different threads. ;)

We used an adjustable wrench to remove the drain plug. I think it measured out on the wrench to 1 1/4 inch for the size of the plug.
