Re: What size wrench and other ?'s
I am changing, well trying to change, the oil on Shay's Volvo Penta AQ125A engine. Questions are:
What size wrench do I need to buy for the drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan?
Don't need a wrench if you get one of these;

It will pump the oil out of the pan through the dipstick tube, and will be a whole
lot less messier than draining the oil into something in the bilge.
The size of the drain plug I don't know off hand. Now would be a good excuse to get a nice assortment of metric combination wrenches, you will need them elsewhere...
I would go to your local NAPA for this one. NAPA actually carries the full line of Sierra marine stuff. You also may find that an oil filter from a 240 series Volvo car (same engine as what you have) may work.
For the record, this is the filter Iboats lists for your engine;

This is the Sierra part number for their filter; 18-7878 (not in stock at Iboats)
How many quarts of oil do I need to put back in?
I would figure on at least 5 quarts. May take a little less than that though.
30 or 40 weight Detergent oil, or 10W-30/10W-40 should work fine.
If you go to NAPA and want to spend a few bucks less, grab the NAPA brand oil, it's actually Valvoline in NAPA's bottle. If it were me, I would consider this oil change more or less a flush. I would run it with this oil for a little bit, then change it again.
