Im trying to figure out what size engine to get for a thirty foot outrigger sailing canoe(proa),figure less than a thousand pounds.ive read about a guy using an 9.9 four stroke and he could cruise at like 11 knots.Im kinda new to outboards and the prices on new and used arent very far apart.I kinda like knowing what oil was used and not buying someone elses abused problem.I considered a fifteen hp outboard at first, i considered a two stroke but now lean towards a 4 stroke. The new tohatsu 9.8 seems light.Any advice would be appretiated.

Re: What size

Hi,
If weight is important maybe a 9-10 hp 4-stroke can be a good choice:

(Weight usually excludes engine oil, rigging, hardware and propeller below.)

Tohatsu 9.8 hp 4-stroke (81,5 lb/37 kg):
http://www.tohatsu.com/outboards/9_8_4st.html

It recieved 2004 Editors’ Choice Award” from Motorboating Magazine:
http://www.tohatsu.com/news.html
On the other hand Yamaha has two year in row ranked highest in JD Power customer satisfaction study:
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/news/dynamicnews.aspx?aid=306&lid=5&lc=otb

Mercury 9.9 hp 4-stroke (84 lb/38 kg):
http://www.mercurymarine.com/9.9_fourstroke3

Honda BF9.9 (92-98 lb/42-44 kg):
http://www.honda-marine.com/bf9_specs.htm

Yamaha F9.9 (99 lb/45 kg):
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/product...ear=2005&cat=Four+Stroke+Series&scat=Portable

I think all of the above is availbale with electric start if you want/need that, otherwise you have to manually start the outboard.

Since weight difference is not much between above 4-strokes and fuelconsumption plus force is about same You should also take into consideration factors like dealer/service center near You, price, warranty.

Probably any of the above will be fine, that is my best guess.
I use a Yamaha F115 4-stroke myself.

Good luck.
