What size?

Hello everyone

I am in need of replacing wheels and tires on a my first boat trailer. I already replaced bearings and seals, and have a few questions about the tires. Currently, it has 5.70-8 tires. Two people have recomended that I replace them with the more common 4.80-8 type. I plan on doing a 300 mile trip a few times a summer, so I'm concerned that a smaller tire would not be the best option.

I appreciate the help!

I'd buy the bigger ones, then you can take the old pair along for spares.

Re: What size?

What size tire you use is very dependent on the load the trailer must carry. A 4.80 x 8 cannot carry the same load a 5.70x8 can. The difference in price is not significant, the bigger tires are larger in diameter so they spin slower and as a result build up less heat. Also be certain you check the load range on the existing tires. It is specified as B, C, etc. Use the same load range as the existing tires.

As Silvertip. Load rating is vital or you will be one of those folk at the side of the road watching the other boaters go by !!!!

Re: What size?

Bigger is better. I put 4 to 5 thousand highway miles on my trailer with very little weight and 4.8 tires and I wished I had the room for bigger. Tires wore quickly and very hard on bearings. 5.7 size are quite common. Stick with it unless you have room for a 10" wheel.

Re: What size?

Ok, I see the benefit of larger wheel/tire size. I'm planning on keeping the 5.70-8's and perhaps upgrading to a C load rating. Thanks for the input!
