Wondering what plugs to use in my 92 Evinrude 65HP? Manual says QL16V (pretty sure thats it). I dont like the idea of running a weird design plug. What do you guys reccomend?

I think most people in here would say that the manual is a really good source of info on what plug to use. Just make sure it is the right manual for your motor.

And stick with the champions, no alternates.

Im not really up on the champion number system. What would the difference be in a QL16C, QL16YC and QL16JC4?

QL16YC's should be a suitable replacement for the QL16V right?

Re: What spark plugs to use?

Nothing weird about a QL16V. It is a surface gap plug that is all.

It is the currently recommended plug for the 1992 65 hp commercial model

Otherwise the recommended plugs are the conventional QL77JC4 or QL82C, gapped at 0.030"

No it is not correct to say that QL16YC's should be a suitable replacement for the QL16V.
Is there even such a plug?

Re: What spark plugs to use?

I noticed that the older engines (84-87) use a QL77JC4 and the newer engines (94-2001) use QL78YC. Would either of these be suitable?

Whats up with the heat ranges anyway? Which ones hotter and colder? Nobody can explain the difference in the C, YC and JC4 ending in the plug number?

Im not really sure if such a plug exists or not? I know there is a QL78YC for sure so i assumed you could get the same style plug in the 16 heat range?

I really dont like the idea of surface gap plugs. I've been messing with small engines all my life and every single one of them always used the same basic concept for a spark plug. I dont see any reason to change things now.
