What symtoms will coil give if bad??

Evinrude 75, 1965. Steady spark and then spark intermitently goes away and engine dies. Have spark plug tester in line and can observe this clearly. Any ideas??? I put in new points and condenser.

Crank the engine at night and see if you can see any spark jumping off of coils to ground.

Hi roostmax,<br />What did you set the points at? I think that they should be set at .020" I believe this is probly your problem, but thats a guess.<br />Good luck

also the coil on the motor you have rarely ever gives any trouble ,i have only ever seen a very few go bad . you may also want to look at the distributor cap it could also be the source of your problem .also still a possibility it could be in the wiring or the key switch,in order to check this just remove the ground wire connected to the terminal on the side of the distributor,and see what happens.

You didn't give the model number as there are two completely different types of ignition systems used on the 75, magneto and 12v.<br /><br />Do the plug wires come out of the bottom of the distributor (magneto) or out of the top (12V)? The 12V system also has an automotive looking coil attached to the back of the motor.

Mine is the 75 Speedifour with magneto ignition. wires come out the bottom of the magneto and the coil is inside.

If it has the original 37 year old coil in it, it may be getting weak or cracked. You have to remove the coil to inpect it. Take it to a dealer and have him load test it and check for voltage leaks. If I remember correctly, the early coils were tan or brown and the improved late model coils were a burgandy color. There should also be 2 thin plastic pieces, one on each side of the coil. That was from a service bulletin back in the '60s. Make sure you have the correct rotor in the magneto. It has a wide blade on it verses the narrow blade of the 12V system.
