Most automive tachometers will let you select between 4, 6, and 8 cylinders. I had a cheap one from oreilly's that cost about 430 wasn't anything fancy and read up to 8k rpm which should be more than enough for your motor and should read accurately, although it won't be very waterproof or marine grade but if it is mounted in a console then it shouldn't see much direct water contact anyway.

A standard marine teleflex brand tach is all you need. They have a selector switch on the back for the correct pulse(p). Yours should be 6p if I'm not mistaken. Regardless, the tach should come with a table of settings for each motor.

Inexpensive and accurate in my experience.

Cheers.

Car tachs won't work on your outboard. You need one that counts the pulses in the alternator. That's why you need to know the number of pulses per rev. Virtually all outboard tachs these days are alternator tachs.
