What temp should my 1998 115 run at ?

I bought my 1998 115 new in 1999. It has 700 hours, and I run in on a SeaRay 175 bow rider.

When I first bought it the temp would run around 145 degrees at idle, and when I put the hammer down I could watch the temp gage move quickly down to the low peg on the gage.

At the time, I asked my dealer about it and he said that at idle, the 145 degree thermostat was controlling the temp, but at speed, the water pump produced enough pressure to open the poppet valve which bypassed the thermostat and resulted in the cooler running temps.

Over the years I've notice that the running temp is creeping higher and higher, it now runs at about 130 degrees and still idles at 145 degrees.

My first guess was to replace the water pump impeller. I did so, and I noticed that the pee hole stream was a little stronger, but the temps remain at 130/145.

I actually feel more comfortable running at 130, seems like there would be less carbon build up at a warmer temp. But intuition aside, what temps should I be seeing, and if 130 is not proper, what should I look at next ?

Thanks !!

Probably service your poppet valve.

As the engine is getting old it become a matter of the impeller wears and don't blow the popit valve open as much as a new impeller so sevicing the popit valve may not help, why worry as long as it stays below 145
