ok so todayi fired up my 1992 150 hp evinrude in my driveway . i am anticipating a boat out ting this weekend. Now i am new to boating !st boat, so i am learnig the ropes. i do not know what the part is called but it is a black box looking thing wich the fuel line and oil line run through, the primer is attached there too. when i squeeze the gas line primer bulb , fuel squirts out the side of this box , it might be it needs a gasket? or maybe tighten the 4 screws wich hold it together? i do not know but i have a friend who was helping me whom was a marine mechanic for 20 years , he has since moved away. he told me not to mess with stuff i didnt understand or i could do more harm than good ( sound advice i think). so what do i do? also there is a red primer lever which has 3 positions 1. perpendicular to the fuel line and the other 2 at right angles to the fuel line in the up or down postion. what position should the primer switch be in? i ask all this cause very time i take it out i spend at least half an hour trying to get the boat started. once it starts though and warms up , it restarts imediately. i havent had her out in 14 months and when i finallgot her started in my driveway a white cloud of smoke billowed out. i dont know if its the old gas. or some thing else, any ideas. also what should i do as maintenance on the engine / like many of you , i am a working man and am trying to avoid costly repairs and my wife gripping at me to sell it. the engine is hard to start everytime , any ideas on how to get it going faster? my routine is squeeze the gas primer bulb until firm then hold in the primer at the ignition switch for ten seconds and turn the key, the engine turns over and over and over and i repeat these steps over and over , sometimes for up to 30 min until it starts. that is the sequence i was taught. sometimes i would be at the dock for 30 min or more trying to start it in vain. and my angry wife is there tapping her foot and telling me to sell the pos. ive been told its a good engine in good condition , so am i doing something wrong? help me tom cruise , help me oprah winfrey and dont let the invisible fire burn my friend!

Maybe snap a picture of that black box and post it up (sounds like a VRO/Fuel Pump). But it shouldn't be leaking at all and may also be the reason for your hard starts.

ok so heres the picture of the box to which i refer. i notice that when the red lever is in the down position , fuel does not squirt out when i squeeze the fuel primer bulb. but when i had the lever in the up position and squeezed the primer bulb ,fuel then squirted out of the box where the box itself sandwiches together and i suppose there is a gasket there? maybe it needs a gasket? also i tried looking up the service manual for my motor by using the serial and model number match up tool from this site but nothing matched up. dont want to buy the wrong manual. tried a hundred times to upload photos but they wont upload , getting message (file to large) and (upload failed) , will try later

Manual is a must in my opinion. In the meantime do some studying out here.
