What tire rating and how much does my boat weigh?

I need to order two new wheels for my boat. (I have no spare so I figure I'll get two matched wheels, then keep these as spares.) I have no clue whatsoever what my boat and trailer weighs. Boat is a 16 foot fiberglass Deck Boat with a 55 HP 2 stroke Yamaha.

My current tires are 4.80 X 12", 4 bolt. I don't know their rating and also I'm not assuming they are the correct rating.

I was looking at a bias set with a 990 lbs at 90 psi rating. So I'm guessing that two tires would allow for 1,980 pounds???

I realize that no one here will know the exact answer, but advice is welcome.

Thanks.

The ONLY way to know what your boat/trailer weighs is to take it to a scale and WEIGH it. Good luck.

According to NADA, the 1977 16' version weighs 1280#, plus motor 225, battery 50, fuel 100, gear 100, and trailer 225, for a total of approx 1980#.

So, unless the 1972 version was substantially lighter, you are at the weight limit for those tires.

I would suggest going with 5.30x12 Load Range C, 1045# per tire.

Or look into upgrading the trailer to something in the 2500# rating.

How much boat is hanging over the bunks on the trailer?? the trailer looks not only too short but too light for that boat. The next issue is that upgrading the load rating on tires does not increase the capacity of the trailer. Trailers with that size tire RARELY had anything but 1-1/16 dia inner and outer bearings which puts the axle anywhere from 1750# to 2000#. So tires are only part of the equation. Springs, spindles and the axle itself are equally important. Look at the ID tag on the trailer. It usually indicates GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) with a specific tire size. Without that information you need to weigh the rig loaded the way you travel.

Thanks for the advice !!!

I've ordered two Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tires with 12" Galvanized Wheels - 4 on 4 - Load Range C which has a max load of 1045 lbs.

As for the trailer, I don't know it's load limit. My title says it's homemade and there is an official Illinois VIN sticker for it being homemade. But no load limit. And to me the trailer does not look homemade. I figure someone had a trailer with no title and did the homemade paperwork just to get it titled.

As for the trailer hanging off the bunks, I think it sits on them. I know I have a broken/rotted piece of one sticking out from the back end of the trailer. That will be one of the things for me to check into the first time I get the boat on the water.

Again, Thanks for all the advice/information I get here at iboats.com . I may not follow all of it, but I appreciated people sharing their knowledge.

Definitely make sure your boat is fully supported at the stern otherwise hull damage can occur.
