What to charge to store trailer/boat?

My friend's older brother just bought a boat and rented a slip...his yard is tiny so he has nowhere to keep the trailer. My friend said he might ask me if he could pay me to store it in my yard, since I have lots of room (1 1/2 acres).

What should I charge him if he does ask? I don't want to charge a lot since he's my friend's brother, but I don't want a boat trailer sitting in my yard for free either. I was thinking $10/month(?)

Then, he might want to store the boat as well in the off season. What would be a good rate for that? $30/month maybe?

Those rates seem low to me, well the $10 rate does.

You are going to have to mow around a trailer or move it to mow and you are going to pick up some minor liabilities in case of fire, theft, damage, etc.

I would be thinking $30 and $50, and I would be sure that my homeowner's insurance lists and covers it.

That'd be steep for a complete stranger IMO.

There's a storage facility right near one of the lakes I frequent. Open storage (gated with barbed wire) is $25/mo. Garage storage is $55 or $60 IIRC.

$10/30 seems reasonable to me, maybe 10/20.

those were storage fees back in the 60's here. he better go grab one of those garages, keep the trailer in it for summer, and boat and trailer for winter.

In a business transaction, everyone is a stranger. There are no friendly exchanges of money.

Just let that trailer get vandalized in your yard and see how fast your buddy's Bro sues you.

I called a couple local mini-storage places inquiring about parking my boat in one of there outside parking spots. Even that was over $40 a month. So if you want to cut him a deal...$30 a month. I'd jump at it. I pay my uncle $100 to store my boat in his barn all winter which I think is a deal but he's blood :)

Thanks for the input! Not sure what I'd charge yet, but some of your comments about liability and such made me think maybe I should write up a little contract saying "not responsible for damages" or something similar if I go through with it.

the going rate around here is $2.00 a foot from the tounge of the trailer to the rear of the swim platform and you must supply a drive lock and you sign a release of liability for theft, weather or fire damage.

I must have a great friend. I store my 17' bass boat in his pole barn all winter for free. He just tells me to make sure it's insured because his won't cover it.

I let my friend park his pontoon here at no charge. Big deal. I have the room and he doesn't. I never thought about liability but he's not the "sueing" type.

I went to see about storing my 15' locally.

$100 a month for 30'
$150 for 35'
$200 for 40'

Sence I wanted to store the tow vehicle too, I quickly said F'that

but $10 a month, $120 a year. Thats nothing really, why bother charging him at all?

Your better off asking yourself, will it ever be in your way, our get mad its there?

Re: What to charge to store trailer/boat?

All depends on what part of the country you live in and where exactly it is getting parked. Out in a field, make sure the boat is protected against the varmints chewing up the upholstery/wiring. Up by me, storage for the winter on private land usually runs a couple hundred for the season ( for us, that's darn near 6 months ) All depends on what and where.

Personally, I'd consider it a favor card. Next time you need some heavy lifting, you cash that baby in :D. If the trailer was a nuisance to store, or I was getting grief from the wife, then I'd probably charge a nominal flat rate fee to "keep her off my back", so to speak.

Re: What to charge to store trailer/boat?

I used to allow various friends to park their boats on my land...I had 3 acres and where the boats were parked were out of the way and sort of out of sight behind some trees, so I didn't charge them anything. I only allowed one friend at a time though, because I had a boat myself and didn't want the yard to start to look like a boatyard. My house was 1/4 mile from the boat ramp so it was a prime spot. Its not costing you anything for it to be there and if it is well out of your way, I wouldn't charge him...you may need a favor someday.

Re: What to charge to store trailer/boat?

The guy wants to store only the trailer on your land, not the trailer and boat, correct? Would you be able to move the trailer if you had to?

Consider the "favor someday" card; does he "do stuff" that you could you use help with on a regular basis?

I'd say ~$120/year is reasonable for the trailer only and the "favor someday" situation...

FWIW, I give a guy I know (friend's father) $365/year ($1/day) to store by boat AND trailer indoors in his large unheated/cement floor quonset building when not in use. He said "...$365 will pay the property tax for the year ... so fair enough". Good deal for both of us!!!

Same here.....My dad's friend who owns a farm and a few barns lets us store it there as long as we have insurance for it.

The barn is pretty nice and well insulated, he works out there during the winter on some antique tractors that he rebuilds.

Its sort of "do a favor, get a favor" sort of a deal. We both help each other out when needed.

Re: What to charge to store trailer/boat?

Saw him over the weekend and he didn't ask, so he probably has other plans (he's storing it at his late father's house, which just sold, so he has to move it soon). In the unlikely event he asks if he can store the boat on my property in the off-season, I think I'll just decline for liability reasons. He's not my friend, he's my friend's brother. If it was my friend in the same situation I would gladly store his trailer/boat for free, he's done me enough favors over the years!
