well i took my boat to a certified mechanic here in ky because i noticed that i had water in my lower unit and i had fishing line around the prop. So i figured that the prop seal was bad. keep in mind that my motor has always ran like a top with no issue. he said that since he has it apart that it would be a good idea to put in new water pump and i agreed. my boss went to pick up my boat and when he got there they said that they couldnt get it to run to check it. brought to me and the all the wires from the starting battery was removed the battery bolts where missing, the gas line was unhooked from the motor, and the circulating tube to the pee hole was off. well i put it all togeather and took it to the lake, fired right up. well started out down the lake and the horn started to go off, i stoped seen that the motor was smoking and that it wasnt putting out any water. i took it back to mechanic and told him the situation he looked at the motor and called me today saying that the plate was on upside down on the water pump causing it to chew up the water impeller, but he didnt do it, and my motor is shot and lost compression on the bottom cylinder which was 145, 140 and 140. my motor always ran great a pumped water like a new boat. he says that the plate was put on upside down before he serviced it. what to do know.

if he was a certified mechanic, why didnt he put it on the right way before installing new one.i would go talk to the owner of the company and if that doesnt go anywhere ,call a lawyer.maybe drop the lower unit and found out what went wrong and if it can be fixed

Your mechanic sounds like a real tool. I would try to find a new one.

Although it sounds as though he put the pump in wrong, he did not overheat the motor. You took a motor that you knew had the water pump worked on, and you knew that the engine had not been tested. Then you ran it without checking the water flow upon startup. Sorry, but the pump installed wrong is not the only problem here. I think you share as much blame as the mechanic for the overheat. The telltale is there for a reason.

The mechanic should have tested the motor, before it even left the shop. It would have been standard procedure on any service job. Why they had stuff apart up on the top end, is beyond me. I thought the problem was in the lower unit. If you're shellin' out a lot of money for a mechanic to fix your motor, especially on something that simple, it should have been done right and checked before the phone was picked up to call the owner. Just my opinion. Unfortunately, I have learned to not trust many people, when it comes to doing anything from me, so I have learned to get a lot of things done myself and if you pay anyone to do something for you, you have to look it over good, before you take it home and see that it was done right.

there is a shop near me that "fixes" any small engine, from outboards to weedwackers. people have taken things in to get looked at....only to be told that it would be cheaper to buy new, than to repair what you have. then , you can drive by, and see this "unrepairable" stuff setting out....for sale..and working fine! not every shop is shady, but always be sure to ask around !

I would definitely stink up the place for this guy if it were me. However, if you shut it down as soon as the buzzer sounded off, I believe I'd get my motor back and start checking it out myself. I've had my motor overheat as I'm sure 1000 other people have and not lost compression. That's the reason the factory put the alarm in. You didn't run it for a while after it over-heated did you? Pick it up and start from the top; Compression test/spark test/fuel test/cooling. Post your results, and what model motor it is, and these guys will get you up and running. That way you can at least enjoy the lake while you're waiting on a court date. Then develop a start/run procedure that includes making sure she's pumping water before you take off.

They may have been telling the truth. Your $115 weedwacker might not be worth fixing it at $60/hour to fix it if your going to pay the bill but if they gave him $20 for it or they just left it there the owner can put in several hours on his own fixing it with say $15 worth of parts and still make $20 bucks on it. They do that kind of stuff in their off time.

Again he may just bee crocked.

Could just need a head gasket. Depends on how hot it got.....if it got shut down right after the temp alarm went off, then it may be OK with just a head gasket and a properly assembled water pump.

What motor ya got? Most base plates
can't be installed upside down, the
holes won't line up?
I have seen a lot of after market
impeller's come lose on the hub.
I'm with the other guys, horn sounds
and you shut it off, now no compression,
I'd get it out of there.

I agree with wiffisher. The first thing I do when I start up my motor is check my pee hole. You should of done so too, especially after a new water pump.

the motor is model-e70elcr 70hp evinrude. i know that i should have checked the pee hole but i didnt that doesnt make up for him not checking it either. after paying him 400.00 for resealing the lower unit and while he was at it change the water pump, i thought it should be in fine working order. i dont think i will ever take my boat to a dealer agian. im going to get a service manual and be the only one to touch my motor. i put in heating and air for a living and if i screw something up i fix it. its like saying that i put in a new system for you and you ran it all night and called me said that it quit and i forgot to put freon in it and locked the compressor up. and i told you that you should have checked the freon and its your fault.

I would recommend a OEM service Manual.
The after market manual's jump around
and will leave you scratching your head.
If you can let everyone know what you
find with the impeller & base plate.
Any thoughts on checking for water
in the lower unit?

That's going to be expensive, with the plate on top of the impeller it blocks off All Water Flow to the motor, the head will need to be removed and checked for warpage, you also need to have the thermostat removed and while the housing is off, carefully remove the springs for the relief valves and make sure the valves themselves are not melted as they are plastic.

The other problem is that when they get that hot, the stator can become damaged along with the power pack, coils, rectifier, etc.

side cover gasket and powerhead base gaskets will more than likely leak as well, basically you will need to completely inspect and replace as needed.

Re: what to do now that mechanic put in new water pump and now the motor is shot

This kinda reminds me of a job I did on an old 7.5 Evinrude many years back. My customer had a waterpump replacement done at another shop and the nig nog who did it, took out the upper bearing plate completely and attached the waterpump housing and wear plate to the gear case, where the upper bearing was supposed to go. The guy gets the motor back and it roasts out the pistons, the first five minutes he runs it. He brings it to me and I not only had to re-do the water pump job right for him, but I also rebuilt his powerhead for him too. New pistons, rings, upper bearing and gaskets, he got back the nicest running motor ever. :D
