Hi folks. I have a eightynine bayliner cuddy cabin that looks like a gray hard material under the valve cover right above the freeze plug where someone had patched the block. It is running great-top speed about 40 mph temp about 170.however it does leak water from the old patch and I was wanti8ng to know what to do about it. My first boat and I only have 1200 in it right now.can i use a gm motor from junk yard for block replacement? any vehicles you recommend to this with? Thanks for any help!!! Or any type of stuff to use to patch again just to get through this season?

The gray stuff is probably JB weld. Not some thing I would use to fix a cracked block, but I have seen it done. Usually you have to grind the area around the crack to get a good repair with this stuff. As far as a replacement goes, what engine do you have.

Hello and welcome.

You won't find that engine in an auto junk yard - I don't think it had an auto application.

Good news is that it's probably the most common i/o engine out there and easy to find used.

Welcome to the cracked block club.

I traded a jetski for a 92 20' Bayliner Capri Classic. I checked it out before we traded, it was leaking, from what looked like the freeze plug. This was the first time out after winter, so I gave the guy the benefit of the doubt.

I pounded it out and put a new one in, still leaked. Took the manifold off to get at it better and it had a 8 inch or so crack that someone had JB'ed before.

I took it and had it welded, but it still leaked. Bought a long block and sold the boat. I heard that 3.0's were famous for cracking there if water froze in them.

Thanks for the reply`s. I will pull it apart next weekend to see exactly how bad it is and post as to what I find and what remedy I come up with.
Thanks again. Maybe some more jb until next season. It is a 3.0 gm 140 hp engine. Anyone know of a 4.3 that would bolt up to a omc cobra drive. 13x19 prop installed but need advise on one that would give me more top end speed. I guess im one of the lucky ones as there is no water in the oil!!!:

Ayuh,... Nothing Special about the 3.0l,... ALL motors Crack when frozen with water in them...

Ayuh,... It Might bolt up,.. But,.. It brings More issues with it,...
Like you'd have to change the outdrive's Gear Ratio...

Thanks for the help!! I pulled engine out and found a crack about 1/2 inch right above the freeze plug. Took it to work and had our welder fix it and all is good now. Running 15 degrees cooler than before and no leaks. My bilge pump is very happy!!!
