Im looking at a 97 boat that has a 1997 evinrude intruder outboard. Anything in particular i should look for when checking out this motor? I plan to do compression test, run the motor on muffs, do a slight rev and listen to idle and see how strong the tell tail (water coming out) seems...

anything else like a problem that is notorious with this outboards or were they pretty strong?

Thanks guys!!

Correct on what you have said, but I would add the following:

  • Crack drain screw to check for water in LU
  • That motor has 1 carb per cylinder. As such, run it under load if you can. Any carb problems (like needing to be cleaned) will really only rear their head under a load situation. I just purchased a 97 115 Intruder. Ran great on muffs, great compression (138/cylinder), but under load it wouldn't even try to get on plane. Had to re-build all 4 carbs (yours will have 6). Had a shop do it and it wasn't cheap.
  • Check the charging system. Start the engine and ensure voltage at battery climbs above 13v.
  • Make sure it smokes decently when you start it up. This motor has the better OMS pump, so the mixture will be 60:1-50:1 (the OMS doesn't vary the oil mixture as much as the VRO). If it isn't smoking well when you first start it up then you may have issues with the oiling system

Great info!

IF i do buy the boat, would you guys recommend keeping the OMS pump or do what i hear is done often and delete the pump? (Personally i like the idea of an oil tank and not mixin' and measuring at the pump all the time)

If it's on the boat even better, do all that's suggested and run the crap out of it to make sure it planes properly and has no alarms.

I know the motor should have even compression with about a +- 10% reading on all cylinders, but what number is good? like 140psi on all 6 or 110 on all 6 or what?

100 psi or higher and look at # 1 cylinder piston top, if clean let it be....

What Faztbullet meant was take out the spark plugs and look into all the cyl's. If # 1 looks like it has been steamed cleaned and the rest don't leave it alone.

Sorry i dont understand what your getting at, leave what alone? Leave the OMS pump on if the #1 piston looks clean and the rest don't?

ANd if the #1 piston looks oily then take the OMS off or disable?

If #1 looks like a brand new piston vs the other 5 do not buy.
OMS is a good system, there are other benefits besides just mixing the oil, if you disable it you lose the alram.
