What to look for on a 15 year old motor?

Looking at a small walk-around with a 1999 Merc DFI 225. He says has only 44hours on it. Only had I/Os before so I am lost. On a 15 year old motor, even with low hours and good compression, what other parts would be suspect? Rubber fuel lines, oil seals, wiring, etc? Any way to check or just run till it breaks Thanks Gil

you might want to test the compression yourself if possible before purchase. You can borrow a gauge from Autozone. And you should at least change the water pump impeller and gear oil at the minimum when you get it home before your first trip. I would also recommend pulling all the spark plugs and putting a little 2 stroke oil in each hole and then put the plugs back in.. then turn the flywheel by hand a few times to make sure nothing is stuck.

believe there is a sticky about how to wake a older motor up somewhere in here. Low hours isn't always a good thing as well as sitting.
