Hi, I have to pull my tanks from my 32ft Chris craft, the tank supports have fallen apart and need replacing. I checked the tanks today and I estimated about 90+gal in each tank. I siphoned off 12 gal and it didn't make much of a dent in the volume. What can I use to store the gas in? DO they make a larger type jerry can? or something that can be used?

55 gal drums would be perfect, tho I don't know where to get them and I'm not sure that would be safe. Any suggestions on a temporary storage for the fuel?

I can give the fuel away if needed, but I can't have it spilled. was also thinking of having the fuel pumped out, anyone know of a company in New Jersey that does mobile pumping?

Had a friend who was rebuilding an airplane. He found a guy who restored 55 gal drums. They look brand new and are certified food safe. If they are food safe, they are safe for storing fuel.

I wish I could give you more information.

call the companies that clean fuel and who handle fuel spills, and work it out with them. They pump out gas, clean it, and return it; just skip a step.

Or you might find a used tank or two you can rent.

Your marina might have an empty boat that will buy it, maybe a commercial boat. But I wouldn't pump it into another person's boat for storage and get it back; no telling how funky their tank is.

I would get 55 gal plastic drums from my local Humane Society in the past. They bought pet soap that came in the drums and always had a need to dispose of them. I would donate a couple bucks to them while there.

Good Luck!

Around here, there are a couple posts a week on craigslist of people with 55 gal plastic drums. Another route, if you have the means to move it (tractor or fork truck) would be one of the plastic containers that sits on a skid and is encased in an aluminum frame. They are often used for food stuffs. I bought 2 last year for $35 ea to use as rain collectoin containers. They are 270 gallons. What ever you choose - BE CAREFUL. Good luck with it.

5 gal jerry cans are the cheapest container to purchase. Since it is winter, why not siphon 25 gal each weekend(5 jerry cans) and burn it in the car during the week? In about 6 weeks the tanks will be dry.

Thanks for the ideas, I was on craiglist and saw the big plastic tanks with the aluminum cage around it, was $45 each. Might be the cheapest way to go. I need to get the fuel out in a about a weeks time, I need to pull the tanks and replace the cradles they sat on. Then I can put my floor back and keep the weather out of the boat.

I could put a sign out by the street and say free fuel to boats on trailers, after 2-3 boats, I will be empty.

You can also pick up big drums (55 gal) from car washes. I've gotten a few from a local car wash for free.
