What to Use?

I have an older Carolina Skiff 19' dlx that the previous owner screwed to the floor, these screws pulled out. After inspection, the floor is only fiberglass and foam,no wood, the glass is thin and will never hold a screw. I plan to build a deck out of PVC boards big enough to hold the console,fip/flop seat and front cooler, these can be screwed to the PVC. What kind of glue do I use to attach the PVC boards to the fiberglass floor???

Re: What to Use?

You don't.

PVC boards are relatively weak and aren't designed for any structural use, just trim.

It may better to bond some hardwood blocks to the deck using some epoxy and screw the seats and console to them from the side. You can also supplement this with some 5200 under the flanges to bond them to the deck.

If the PVC is glued solid to the floor it really would just be something to screw to. The larger area should provide more glue surfice and a cleaner look. wood rots, still have to glue it.

Re: What to Use?

There isn't any type of glue that is going to reliably hold PCV boards with a center console attached them to a fiberglass deck. CCs take a great deal of abuse and poorly mounted ones pull out or break off.

The correct way is to glass in aluminum plates with threaded mounting holes, or angle stock and bolt the console to them.

Another way is to glass the console directly to the deck.

The next option is build up the glass to the thickness needed so the screws will hold.

Glassing it to the deck is the strongest, followed by the aluminum mounts, last are the screws.

If I were to use wood instead of PVC, What would be the best kind to use?

Re: What to Use?

you can use just about anything you want from plywood to oak, just coat it with resin and some csm and it will be there a long time.

Re: What to Use?

Sorry I'm new to this what is csm? Can I just apply the resin on top of the sanded floor and then stick the precoated boards on it?

Re: What to Use?

if i was doing it i would sand the floor in the area to be covered, apply resin to the floor and wood, take a peice of csm and stick it to the back of the wood, make sure all is wetted real good place wood on deck and weight with concrete blocks, 5 gal buckets full of water whatever you have, leave it overnight, then you should be able to do your screwin from there.
csm-chopped strand mat, in this case it and the resin will be a barrier from the weather.
if your using general purpose resin have everything cut to size, edges trimed, and all supplies on hand for final assembly.

Re: What to Use?

Would epoxy resin be the best to use? Should I then put another coat of the resin over the lumber before attaching the console?

Re: What to Use?

never used epoxy resin b4, what i understand from some of the sages around here is epoxy and csm are not compatible, i guess there is a binder in the mat that epoxy does not have the ability to break down, poly resin does.
epoxy is $tronger and more expensive. if it where me id just use poly, your hull was probly fabed using it anyway.

Re: What to Use?

I would rather use epoxy, for it's bond strength, what do all the people on here, that brag on epoxy use if it doesn't work with csm? This is my first project and I want it to last, I don't want to have to redo it.

Re: What to Use?

if your set on using epoxy, skip the csm, id use a notched trowel like for tiling to spread the epoxy on both the deck and your fabed peice. if any ozzes out be sure to clean it up or round it over.

Re: What to Use?

Any expert advice on amat I can use with epoxy???

again....you cant....csm...(matt) does not work with epoxy.

you can use a woven cloth product alone with epoxy....but not poly resin.

i would highly suggest you re-read ondarvr's comments.....and follow them.

you might also benifit from spending a few gazillion hours reading here....i think you have some pre conceived notions that can be dispelled by learning from the people that have allready done what you want to do.

what ever you decide....we are here to help

Re: What to Use?

I would like it if the console was still removeable, virsis glassed in.The console is small, only 28" long x30' wide. Iwant to mount it to the boards to give it moreof a base, with the console and cooler seat on the wood it would be a 42"x 30" unit. I feel this would hold better, and be less stress in a small area, but still not be permanent. This would be my preconcieved notion, how am I wrong. I just need the advise to do the job correctly.

Epoxy works just fine with CSM:

The big question

Can WEST SYSTEM? epoxy be used to wet out chopped strand mat? The answer is yes. The fiberglass strand in mat wets out with epoxy, but the binder holding things together does not dissolve. (It does get put into suspension and is sealed in the cured epoxy.) This undissolved binder causes the wet-out mat to remain a bit stiff compared to wet out with a styrene-based resin. For gently curving or flat projects like cabin soles or plywood decks, mat and epoxy should work fine. The fabric does not wet out perfectly clear with epoxy. Wet-out clarity of mat with epoxy varies somewhat with different suppliers, but none of them wet out as clear as a good 4 oz or 6 oz fiberglass cloth.

Far too many hardware store rumors on this website.

I'm personally not a fan of CSM. I prefer using the proper weights of cloth and roving to provide the strength I'm looking for. Far too often projects done with CSM end up needlessly resin-rich and heavy.
