Replacing the floor and stringers in a 14 ft. bowrider. Need to buy essential tools, which my wife is getting me for Christmas. I have a 30 gal. air compressor. I know a right angle grinder is a must, but can y'all tell me specifics on exactly what to ask Santa for? I'm thinking a sander would be nice as well. Thanks and Happy Holidays!

Re: What tools do I need?

I have a 27gal, 5hp compressor and have completely redone my 15' boat and trailer. The only time I ever had to be mindful of air is when I was painting. If I tried to go too fast, I'd have to wait for it to catch up, but I was using a cheap siphon sprayer. I did my grinding and sanding with electrics. My Skil 4 1/2" grinder has been a good one. Hasn't died in all the dust yet. Can't say the same for my B&D MegaMouse sander. It gave up the ghost the other day. After spending a couple years sanding one boat, three trailers, and lots of wood (including a wood boat), it finally broke something in the gears.

All different kinds of clamps really come in handy on a project like that, as does a shop vac, a box of latex or vinyl gloves, dust masks...

Thanks guys....So I think I'll go with a 4 1/2 inch electris grinder (right angle) and an electric sander (Craftsman)and rule out the potential air issues. Thanks for all the input!!

Re: What tools do I need?

Yes, the electric angle grinder has been my best tool too. Makes an S-load of dust...

Speaking of dust DO NOT ignore the PPE (personal protective equipment) its a MUST-
Ever hear of FIBROSIS, or SILICOSIS? Inhale enough FG dust and your doctor will tell you all about them. Use a respirator, not the flimsy paper masks. Best $30 I've even spent on boat work, lets me work longer too.

#3 is circular saw 7.25 inch. the saw will also take abrasive wheels, great on stringers and engine beds- Eats FG like butter.

#4 a belt sander. With 36 grit paper it erases FG quick! Use it on inside hull curves to expose fresh FG for a stronger bond with the new glass...

HINT: with ANY new tool practice on scrap FG till you see how much it takes off and how fast...

Good luck.
