What type of aluminum is used for boat tops?

Hello,

Does anyone know what type of aluminum is used to fabricate boat hard top or t-tops? I just purchased over $200 worth of various sized 6061-t6 schedule 40 aluminum pipe. When I tried to bend it it cracked and broke. Maybe I should have checked out my material better. If I can't bend it I'll just have to change my design plan. Any help would be great.

Thanks

Usually the same thing you used but the stuff is anodized. It can be bent but you must have the proper dies with the proper radius for each size of pipe. I owned a welding and fabricating company for 20 years doing this kind of stuff here in south Florida.
Since your pipe is not anodized it will be at least a little easier to T.I.G. weld..You are welding it? Those cheap M.I.G. welders they sell WON'T do the job...you'll need over 200 amps of heat to start the crater for welding then it will taper off quickly to continue the bead...

I used Aluminum Conduit,+ a Mig Welder...........

A Tig might be better, But a Mig does Just Fine..............

Most aluminum conduit is made of 3003 aluminum and melts at a much lower temperature. In addition, the conduit is softer and will eventually crack under heavy pounding. One of the most important reasons for not using the MIG process is it continues to pile up filler when you may want only to flow out the weld. On top of that, MIG welding will usally leave a pin hole in the weld some where and eventually through condensation, water will get inside the pipe and it will corrode with the presence of salt air. This then makes it extremely difficult to weld or repair at a later date. Precise MIG welding of aluminum pipe takes a great deal of skill to do well and a machine that has a great deal of heat(300 amp plus capacity) Small alumiminum TUBE(not pipe) can be welded with MIG successfully. Upper limits of most small MIG welders will be probably 1" TUBE not PIPE. And PIPE is what you are supposed to use for tee tops, hard tops, tuna towers.... excetra. TIG units CAN be rented for avery cheap rate and are very easy to use and the only consumable is the argon gas. ONe 120 cu.ft./ bottle can do about 10 hours welding in the shop and cost only 40 bucks or so. The 5356 3/32 filler rod is sold by the pound and cost about 10.00 per pound. Do not use 4043 filler TIG or MIG for hard top or t top construction. Aluminum IS EASIER to weld than steel......

Re: What type of aluminum is used for boat tops?

I am set for the welder, its a 350 amp water cooled tig machine. I have no problem with the welding part. My problem is bending the pipe. I am using an electric tubing bender (mandrel type). The only problem that I see is that the mandrels I have are for O.D. tubing and I'm bending pipe which has a different O.D. But you have to work with what you've got. I have read that T6 aluminum is hard to bend because it is hardened, but it does seem possible. Anymore help would be great.

Thanks

As I said the dies MUST be matched to the PIPE size you're using. Tube dies are different sizes and radius. Another alternative is to rent a portable Greenlee hydraulic pipe bender with an R2 unit for few days...Make sure you rent it with the "Riged" dies you need.
Page 14 of this link is the unit you want to rent:
http://198.247.193.8/wwwroot/greenlee/bending.pdf
